Service - Awhinatanga

What does Service mean?

Service is one of the Core Mercy Values in our school Carmel College. A Core Mercy value is one of the things the Mercy sisters thaught us. We use these to be better people to our community at Carmel. Service is something we do in our every day lives. Whenever someone asks us a favour or we do something for them without them asking we are giving this person service. Teachers are a great example of this because they teach us everthing we know, from 1+1 to coding websites! Service comes from our hearts, we choose wether we want to help someone or not.

We Provide Service when we:

Service in The Community

In Turkey on the 25th April 1915 eight months into the first world war, The Anzac soliders landed on the shores of Gallipolli. These soliders are a sign of service in our community. They risked and gave up their lives for a better New Zealand. To learn more about Anzac Click here!
We can help too in the community not just by fighting a war but by doing the smaller things like helping a teacher by opening a door, smiling at someone who looks sad or disheartned.

Why we should help a fellow human being:

  1. It makes us feel better about our self
  2. It connects with another person or life even for a moment.
  3. It improves the life of another person
  4. It makes the world a better place one step at a time
  5. When you smile the world smiles too!

How you can provide service in the community:

Service at Carmel

At Carmel everyone helps everyone and the biggest service at this school in my opinion are the teachers. They guide and help us through our schooling. There are also many groups around the school that help in various things such as SAVE which help the environment we live in. The Liturgy Reps from each class are jobs which help the school in their own classses learn about what liturgical related things are going around in the school. The Council reps help us to know about what's going on at school in general. The proncipals role in the school is very important. She or he takes note of whats happening at school and promotes it or makes it better.
